Douglas County, Colo. — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a theft on Saturday afternoon at the Target in Highlands Ranch. Deputies immediately began tracking the suspects, who fled in a white truck towing a camper trailer.
“Our deputies don’t back down. If you steal from our businesses, we will find you and we will arrest you,” said Sheriff Darren Weekly. “We’re grateful for retailers who report these incidents right away.”
Deputies observed the suspect vehicle leaving the area and safely monitored it as it entered C‑470.
The driver exited at Yosemite Street, came to a stop, and tried to run. Deputies arrested the suspect after he stopped running in a nearby field.
Body camera footage captured as the suspect apologized and asked, “What was I supposed to do?” The deputy responded, “Not run, brother.”
A second suspect took off running toward Lone Tree. Deputies initiated a foot pursuit and, with assistance from Lone Tree Police Department, located the suspect concealed in heavy brush. He surrendered and was taken into custody.
The truck and trailer jackknifed at the Yosemite exit after the suspects got out of the truck, causing damage but involving no other vehicles.
The driver is facing charges of Vehicle Eluding, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Obstructing a Peace Officer, False Reporting, Operating an Uninsured & Unregistered Vehicle, and Fugitive of Justice. The second suspect is facing charges of Obstructing a Peace Officer, Theft, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
