Traffic Unit

Impaired Driving is a Leading Cause of Traffic Fatalities – If you have been drinking or using marijuana, DO NOT Drive!

Leave Sooner, Drive Slower, Live Longer.

The DCSO remains committed to the safe and efficient movement of traffic on the county’s highways. We operate a Traffic Unit, which includes a motorcycle team.

The Traffic Unit analyzes the data collected from traffic crash investigations and conducts covert speed surveys using modern technology to help ensure the safety of the motoring public in Douglas County.

Deputies assigned the Traffic Unit perform dedicated enforcement daily, concentrating their efforts in areas, identified through analysis, to be notorious for crashes and dangerous drivers. Traffic enforcement deputies assist with all traffic related matters; thus, freeing up road patrol officers and allowing them to apply their time to more immediate patrol duties.

Members of the Traffic Unit routinely focus on school zone enforcement and have partnered with the Douglas County School District Transportation Department to address those drivers that violate school bus warnings and signals.  The DCSO Traffic Unit is dedicated the aggressive driving enforcement and has partnered with the Colorado State Patrol to conduct joint enforcement operations to combat the growing concerns on the state highways through Douglas County as well as participating in the Denver Metro Area Street Racing Working Group.  Douglas County has identified several traffic violations that constitute aggressive driving when two or more are performed in the same sequence of events in the presence of other traffic.  A violation constituting aggressive driving causes the fines to be doubled on the citation.

All deputies assigned to the Traffic Unit have specialized training in Accident Investigation and Reconstruction and utilize state of the art crash scene mapping technology and computer aided drawing systems.  They use a variety of other tools and devices to perform detailed investigations on fatal, serious injury, and felonious crashes.

The Traffic Unit has deputies specifically dedicated to the enforcement of impaired drivers.  Those drivers under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs remains a leading cause in serious injury and fatal crashes.  The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to increasing the safety of all motorists by working to remove these dangerous drivers from the roadways and utilizes dedicated grant funding to supplement their enforcement efforts with additional personnel throughout the year.

The Traffic Unit uses the latest in radar and laser speed detection technology, mobile camera equipment, and mobile computers. These tools help officers to quickly gather, record, or research evidence that is needed for prosecution of traffic violations.
