(Douglas County) On November 15th at 7:30 p.m. deputies responded to a call for service that included a report of a suspect selling drugs in a parking lot in the 8800 block of American Way.
While checking an adjacent parking lot, a deputy located the reported vehicle. A male got out of the truck and walked into a store. The suspect, Raejante Michael Smith-Johnson, from Aurora, had a warrant out of Denver and was taken into custody.
Deputies found $10,680 cash in his pocket. K9 deputies responded to assist. Deputy Kelly’s K9, Onyx, alerted on the suspect’s truck. Deputies searched the vehicle and found 12 grams of cocaine and a handgun. Smith-Johnson was arrested for investigation of possession with intent to distribute and illegal possession of a firearm charges.
Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said, “This is another great example of the alertness, quick action, and excellent teamwork by our deputies to protect Douglas County from criminal activity. We welcome K9 Onyx to our team!”
Onyx is a Belgian Tervuren and is 2 years and 4 months old. He’s extremely loyal and loves to work. He loves his toys and will do almost anything to play with dad. Deputy Kelly has been with DCSO since 2018 and worked as a detentions specialist before attending the academy in 2020. As a deputy, Deputy Kelly was assigned to patrol, has been a FTO (field training officer), DMO (designated marksman officer), less lethal instructor and a K9 decoy for approximately 2.5 years before being assigned to the K9 unit.
