Douglas County, CO – Today, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office joined family, community members, and local officials to unveil the Kendrick Castillo Memorial, a lasting tribute to the heroism and selflessness of the young man whose courage at STEM School tragically and profoundly impacted the nation.
The memorial, standing seven feet tall, serves as both a place of reflection and a reminder of the enduring impact of Kendrick Castillo’s bravery. It honors the life of a young man whose actions exemplify courage, compassion, and selfless giving.
Undersheriff Jason Kennedy spoke at the unveiling, saying: “It is an incredible honor to stand here today on behalf of Sheriff Darren Weekly and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as we dedicate this memorial to a young man whose courage continues to guide our work. Our School Resource Officers are more than law enforcement; they are mentors, educators, and trusted partners who build relationships to keep students safe. Kendrick’s courage and kindness remind us why those connections matter. He inspires our SROs to show up for students every day, not just in moments of crisis. May this memorial serve as a place of reflection and a lasting tribute to Kendrick’s heroic spirit.”*
Division Chief Joel White, one of the first responders present at STEM School, reflected on Kendrick’s lasting legacy: “Kendrick Castillo changed the world through his selfless act, giving his life to save others. He showed us that true bravery comes from love and compassion, not age or rank. It’s about love — love for others strong enough to overcome fear. Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know John and Maria Castillo. In every conversation, in every story they’ve shared, one thing is clear: Kendrick was raised to give — to give kindness, to give effort, to give of himself without hesitation. His courage was no accident. It was the natural reflection of the love and faith that filled his home.”
The memorial is located at Civic Green Park in Highlands Ranch.
