Deputies Arrest Two on Outstanding Warrants Following Church Burglary Investigation

Earlier this month, deputies responded to a reported trespass at a church retreat center in Sedalia. The caller told dispatch that a man and woman had stayed overnight at the retreat center without permission.

This call followed an incident the previous evening when deputies were dispatched to a nearby address after a vehicle was reported abandoned near the church property. When deputies checked the license plate, they learned it had an active “attempt to locate” alert through the Denver Police Department. The man and woman connected to the vehicle were reported to have multiple misdemeanor and felony warrants out of several agencies, including allegations that they had rammed a Denver Police vehicle.

When deputies arrived at the church, they were told two individuals were believed to be inside the building. Deputies established a perimeter around the building and initiated a coordinated search using drones and K9 units. K9 Deputy Kelly responded with K9 Onyx to assist in the search.

Before entering, deputies made several loud announcements identifying themselves as law enforcement. They ordered anyone inside to make themselves known, advised they were under arrest, and directed them to exit the building with their hands up. When no one responded or came out, deputies proceeded with a search of the interior. As they entered, they continued issuing warnings, advising that a K9 unit would be deployed if the suspects did not surrender.

K9 Onyx was deployed to search the building and quickly located the suspects. Deputies then took them into custody. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
