Sheriff Darren M. Weekly
From a young age, Darren Weekly was destined for a career in law enforcement. By the age of five, he was already certain he wanted to become a police officer. His journey into law enforcement began in 1988 when, at just 16 years old, he joined the Cherry Hills Police Department as an Explorer. His commitment and passion for the field quickly became apparent, and after attending the A.C.C. Police Academy at 20, he was hired as a Reserve Officer by Cherry Hills shortly after turning 21.
In 1993, Weekly embarked on a significant new chapter with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (D.C.S.O.). Still only 21, he was assigned to a challenging long-term undercover narcotics operation in a local high school. Throughout his career, Weekly has held various critical roles, including Training Officer, K9 Handler, SWAT Operator, and Persons Crimes Detective. His expertise and dedication as a detective led to multiple major criminal convictions, including in homicide cases.
Sheriff Weekly’s leadership skills shone as he ascended through the ranks, serving in management positions as a corporal, sergeant, and lieutenant. In 2010, his exemplary service was recognized with a promotion to captain by Sheriff Weaver, assigning him to lead the Professional Standards Division. This division covers critical areas such as Internal Affairs, Hiring, Training, and Accreditation, including C.A.L.E.A., A.C.A., and N.C.C.H.C. His efforts were instrumental in D.C.S.O. receiving the “Triple Crown Award” from the National Sheriffs’ Association—a prestigious recognition that fewer than 100 of the over 3000 sheriff’s offices nationwide have achieved.
In 2012, Weekly graduated from the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and was designated as an Incident Commander by the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management the following year. He also completed the F.E.M.A. All-Hazards Type 3 Incident Command School in 2013. That same year, he was appointed to lead the Patrol Division and commanded the majority of the special teams, including the Douglas County Regional S.W.A.T. Team. His tactical and leadership prowess was further enhanced by attending courses such as the National Tactical Officers Association Command and Leadership course and the Fulcrum Concepts Tactical Commanders course taught by Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Tom Di Tomasso (Black Hawk Down).
By 2018, Weekly was serving as the Detentions Division Commander, focusing on the health, safety, and welfare of both pre-trial detainees and sentenced inmates. He championed reintegration programs and initiated the Douglas County Jail’s transition to a Medication-Assisted Treatment (J.M.A.T.) facility to combat opioid addiction among inmates.
In 2020, he took on the role of Investigations Division-Major Crimes Commander, overseeing significant departments such as Crimes Against Persons, Special Victims, Financial Crimes, the Unified Metropolitan Forensic Crime Lab, and Victims Assistance. His extensive experience and respected leadership led to his election as the 34th Sheriff of Douglas County in November 2022, an office he assumed in January 2023.
In 2024, his career marked another high point as he graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, underscoring his commitment to public service and community safety. Sheriff Darren Weekly’s career is a testament to his enduring dedication and visionary leadership in law enforcement.
Sheriff Weekly also dedicates time to serve on several boards and councils, including the Douglas County Community Foundation, the Colorado Human Trafficking Council, the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Foundation, and the County Sheriffs of Colorado Legislative Committee, among others.
