DCSO Honors Alex Mackiewicz: A Year of Remembrance and Advocacy

(Highlands Ranch, CO) On the one-year anniversary of Alex Mackiewicz’s tragic passing, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office stood with his family and friends at a heartfelt candlelight vigil. The vigil was a somber reminder of the impact his memory continues to have on those who loved him.

The Mackiewicz family, led by Alex’s devoted mother, Victoria, has not only been mourning their son but also channeling their grief into powerful advocacy. They are now pushing for tougher penalties for careless driving, a change they hope will prevent future tragedies like the one that took Alex’s life. Their mission is to raise awareness and encourage legislative action to ensure that reckless driving is met with harsher consequences, preventing other families from experiencing such devastating loss.

Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly spoke at the gathering: “Our deputies did their job admirably, but our criminal justice system has failed this family. We were able to get the maximum penalty for the man who killed their son, but it will never be enough. It was a slap in the face. Change is needed. Our legislature needs to pay attention. Thanks to Senator John Carson for taking on this fight. March 6, 2024, is a date in Colorado that will change the course of the criminal justice system and the way careless driving resulting in death is handled in our court system. We need to do better. Colorado can and must do better.” Video of Candlelight Vigil
