VIN Inspections / Verifications

VIN Verifications

All vehicles must be registered in Colorado unless

  • Exempt from registration.
  • Temporarily registered.
  • For the first 36 hours after purchase, a buyer can drive the vehicle without registering it only if they bought it on a weekend or legal holiday or between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. or if they purchased it from someone who is not a motor vehicle dealer.  The vehicle can only be driven from where the seller kept it to where the buyer intends to keep it if the buyer has a bill of sale and proof of insurance in the vehicle.

If you need Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Verification to buy or sell a vehicle or to register a vehicle from another state, please schedule an appointment below.

VIN Verifications are done by appointment ONLY. Please submit your appointment request at least 24 hours in advance. Once your request has been scheduled, you will receive an email confirmation. You will be notified if delays are expected.

The charge for a VIN Verification by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is $8.00, which will be collected by the Department of Motor Vehicles upon registration.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will provide the VIN Verification form and complete it for you; do not print or complete the form yourself.

Please bring the vehicle you need the VIN Verification on, and at least one piece of official documentation such as the registration, title, sales agreement, or statement of origin.
