Perhaps more so than other public service organizations, law enforcement agencies tend to operate in a very high profile environment. The news media plays an important role in satisfying the public’s interest in law enforcement activities by helping to inform the public about activities within their community.
Having trained and experienced Public Information Officers gives the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office an edge in delivering accurate, coordinated information to the news media and its citizens, in a timely and efficient manner.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office PIO’s have received formal training at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and from the Colorado Division of Emergency Management (CDEM) in Colorado. Additional training also occurs through professional affiliations with organizations such as the Emergency Services Public Information Officers of Colorado (ESPIOC).
